Every year on the first Friday of June, Canadians honour the doughnut and the Salvation Army Lassies by celebrating National Doughnut or Donut Day. During WWI, the ladies who served doughnuts to troops were known as Salvation Army Lassies. The first "Salvation Army Doughnut" was served by Salvation Army ladies in 1917.
